Belmont U13 boys win the Jersey 7 – a – side rugby tournament

20 Apr 2018

The Belmont rugby squad which went unbeaten in their regular season flew to Jersey for the 40th annual renewal of the 7 a side rugby tournament. This is always a fiercely competitive event of a high standard with strong teams from the UK entering as well as the host team St. Michaels Preparatory School Jersey.

Weather conditions were far from perfect and the players had to endure constant driving rain throughout the day. In the group stage Belmont had a tough pool and due to late arrivals and event rescheduling, Belmont had to play their final two group games back to back without any rest. Despite this they won their pool by winning all three group round matches. They beat  St. Micheals (UK),  Durlston Court and finally St. Anselms.

With three wins from three Belmont were highly seeded for the semi final where they met the host side St Micheals Jersey. Belmont ran out winners by 31 points to nil and moved on to the final where they met old local rivals Kingwood House. Belmont played super rugby in the final to beat their opponents by 34 points to nil.

They got stronger as the tournament progressed and played some delightful 7s rugby which drew many compliments from coaches of the other teams.  This capped off a wonderful Jersey tour in which the boys also reached the final of the football competition and so lifted the inaugural Cook trophy for best performance across all three sports on the tour (hockey, football and rugby).
