Farlington School – RIBI Young Musician Competition

27 Nov 2014

Talented young musicians from three Horsham schools gave of their best on Thursday 13th November when they performed in the first round of the national RIBI Young Musician Competition organised by Horsham Rotary Club. Pupils from Farlington, Millais and The Forest School took part in the prestigious competition, with vocalists and instrumentalists each performing two contrasting pieces within a 10 minute period.

The competition took place in the main hall at The Forest School with music teachers and Rotarians present. The adjudicators, Mrs Alison Sutton, Director of Music at The Rikkyo School, and Steve Dummer, the conductor of the Horsham Symphony Orchestra, had the unenviable task of deciding the winners. In summarising their decision, Steve Dummer explained to the students that judging a vocalist was relatively simple when compared to a variety of instruments all of which have totally different characters. However a decision was reached, and the vocal prize went to Farlington’s Olivia Middleton, with the instrumental prize awarded to pianist Joe Worskett from The Forest School.

Gordon McConnell from the Rotary Club of Horsham said, “It was a relaxed and enjoyable competition. This is the first year the Horsham Club has run the event, and we are delighted that both Olivia and Joe will go forward to the District competition to be held in February 2015.”
