Fantastic GCSE Results for Leighton Park School!

27 Aug 2014

Delighted students are celebrating a fantastic set of GCSE results at Leighton Park School today. A* to A grades are up on last year by an impressive 8% to 44% of the overall total. “The increase provides a fantastic launch pad for Sixth Form study in International Baccalaureate Diploma (IBDP) and A Levels at Leighton Park.” commented Karen Gracie-Langrick, Deputy Head (Academic). With a 100% pass rate and 72% A* to B grades, there were lots of very happy students and parents on the park.

Bucking the national trend of a decline in the number of A*s, Leighton Park’s top grades are up this year. Manu Sidhu (9A*, 1A), one of seven pupils to have achieved purely straight A*s and As, commented “I am so happy with my results. I want to study medicine eventually and I know these results will set me up for the next step in my education.” Another top scoring student, Asha Sumroy (8A*, 2A) said “It’s brilliant! I’m really pleased. I’ve been worrying about it all week and now I finally know what I’ve got; it’s great!”. High flier, Nat Dean-Lewis (9A*, 1A) who is celebrating by going on holiday two hours after picking up his results, added, “I’m very happy. I’m going to be studying Maths, Further Maths, Physics and Chemistry in the Sixth Form here so I’m glad I’ve got good results to take me forward.”

This year’s cohort has been particularly successful in sciences, languages and maths with 66% of maths students and 64% of physics students achieving A*-A. Mandarin, which is studied from Year 7 by Leighton Park students, who experience a trip to China as part of their course, gained 67% A*-A grades; a phenomenal achievement for so many non-native speakers. Performing arts also did well with 70% of the school’s GCSE music students achieving A*-A grades, many of whom are looking forward to getting involved with next year’s exciting production of ‘Phantom of the Opera’.

Nigel Williams, Head at Leighton Park, said, “I am delighted that the hard work and dedication of the students has been recognised and rewarded with such successful results. To achieve more than 20% above the national average A*-C grades whilst also participating fully in the inspiring extra-curricular programme offered by the school is extremely impressive.”

Leighton Park School, located in 60 acres of beautiful parkland, opposite the University of Reading, offers GCSE students the opportunity to choose from a broad range of 22 subjects. In addition, Leighton Park also offers a rigorous one-year Pre-Sixth Form course primarily for international students seeking an intensive programme of study prior to Sixth Form.

Students currently in Year 9 and their families are welcome to find out more about the GCSE or Pre-Sixth Form courses at Leighton Park at the school’s annual open morning on Saturday 4th October 2014, 10am–12pm.
